Student's comments Yr 8/9

Felix Ferrandis Year 9 ESL

Shopping and cooking :

I went to the supermarket with my mother. It was very easy to find the different ingredients and it didn't cost a lot of money.

When I started to cook, I realised that the recipe was so hard. I burnt the caramel three times!
But my recipe was very good. I put my dish in the fridge, it was ready!

Comments about the experience :

We went to the canteen, we ate a lot of different dishes. Some were delicious, some were awful. It was fun!  We spoke a lot of English.

Roxane Moreau Year 9 ESL

Comments about the experience :

Today, we had to prepare a dish and then we had to learn new vocabulary to describe our friends' dishes.
It was very interesting because now we know a lot of new words and our stomachs are full!
Everybody worked very hard to succeed in cooking a better dish than their classmates. I would like to become a pastry cook so I hope that all the students enjoyed my meringues. Among all the dishes which I tasted, the sweet one I preferred was Ewen's chocolate cake, it was a little burnt but it was delicious!

Camille Stampfli Yr 8 ESL

Shopping and cooking :

I went to Maroubra Junction, to Coles, to buy what I needed to cook :
I bought a box of 12 eggs ($2.50), I bought 1 litre of milk ($2.00), I also bought cheese ($3.70), I bought one onion ($0.80), I bought a box of lard ($2.55).
I didn't buy other ingredients because I already had them at home. It cost me $11.55.

It took me one and a half hours to cook. I did it the evening before and had so much fun! It was the first time that I had baked a cake.

Ewen Dècle Yr 8 ESL

Comments about the experience :

On Tuesday, we tasted the dishes!

Personally, I found Mayeul's sausage rolls very good because I really like sausages and he had wrapped a delicious pastry around them.
I found Camille's dish quite good too, because I like cheese and ham.

Of the sweet dishes, I liked Olivia's chocolate mousse best because it was very sweet and there was a lot of butter.
I loved of course my own chocolate cake...!

Mikel Robin-Diot Yr 8 ESL

Comments about the experience :

All the dishes were very good, but the sweet dish I liked best was Roxane's dish and my favourite savoury dish was Camille's dish.

Roxane's meringue was divine, the meringues were very light and sweet.  I loved it.

I liked Camille's dish because I like ham and cheese, and the loaf was perfect because the other dishes were too salty or not salty enough.

Olivia Keretli Yr 8 ESL

Shopping and cooking :

On Tuesday 21st October after school, I went shopping to find my ingredients. I was looking for cooking chocolate but it was not on the same shelf as the other chocolate. Finally, I found it near the cooking ingredients. Then I found eggs and butter easily. But there wasn't an eggbeater,
so I went to another shop in Maroubra Junction. I had trouble finding it but in the end I found one.

On the Monday after school I had to prepare my dish for the next day. At first, I followed my recipe easily. But then I had to separate egg whites from yolks. I succeeded in separating three of them but the 4th broke! So my sister told me a trick and it became easier. Then I had to whip the egg whites until they were firm with a hand eggbeater. It was very tiring for my arms!
I had no problem with the end of the recipe. Everything went well and I hope it will taste good.

Lina Piredda Yr 8 ESL

Comments about the experience :

My favourite savoury dish was Simon’s bourguignon beef.  Usually, I don’t really like beef with sauce, but this time it was delicious, cooked perfectly and
very tender!  But I just don’t like carrots…

My favourite sweet dish was Sacha’s canele, because I loved the vanilla cream.  It was exquisite!  And the presentation was very pretty!

This experience was very enjoyable for me because the topic was quite interesting and the idea was very challenging. All the students worked very hard to choose exciting menus and recipes for The Week of Tastes, the presentation of all the dishes was pretty and they were all very appetising and creative. All my classmates played the game: they spoke English during the whole lesson. I really enjoyed making other people discover my grandmother’s recipe.

Lucille Clavel Yr 9 ESL

Shopping and cooking :

Sunday, I went to the market to buy my ingredients for my ratatouille.  I bought:
-2 aubergines
-2 courgettes
-1 yellow pepper and 1 green pepper
-4 tomatoes
-1 onion
-3 garlic cloves
-herbs of Provence
-olive oil
For all that I paid $30.

It was the first time that I had made ratatouille, but with my mother's advice I managed to make this dish. I began by cutting all the vegetables into cubes and added salt, pepper and herbs of Provence. Then I cooked it in a wok on a low heat, stirring non-stop so it wouldn't stick. But what was the hardest part of this recipe was to have to cut the onion.  It took me approximately 5 minutes to cut an onion, because I cried a lot.

Comments about the experience :

I went to the canteen to taste each of our dishes, there was Mr. Fichtner who photographed each of our dishes. Then, when all the pictures had been taken we could finally taste our dishes.

At the beginning I tasted the meringues that Roxanne had made, then Olivia's chocolate mousse, sausage rolls by Mayeul, a chocolate cake by Ewen,
a coconut flan by Félix … Then Jane Moffat from Bowen Library came to see our dishes and our menus to choose which menus would have the luck to be displayed at the Library.  I understood that she appreciated mine but I don't know if it is going to be shown. I tasted practically all the dishes, I found them different and pleasant.

The sweet dish that I preferred was Roxane's meringue.
The savoury dish that I preferred was my dish, ratatouille!
