Middle Secondary School: from Year 6 to Year 9
From 11 to 15 years of age, students take the following subjects: French, Mathematics, English, German, Spanish, Earth Sciences, Physics and Chemistry, Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education, History and Geography, and Technology, all taught by specialised teachers. The Law of Orientation and Program guarantees that by the end of Middle Secondary School, students will have acquired knowledge and skills in the following 7 areas:
- Mastering the French language;
- Fluency in a foreign language (at the end of Year 9, students must have reached the A2 level in their chosen foreign language);
- The main principles of mathematics and scientific and technological studies;
- Mastering the techniques of information and communication;
- Humanistic culture;
- Social and civic skills;
- Autonomy and initiative.
At the end of Middle Secondary School, students must sit the exam Diplôme National du Brevet which comprises continuous assessment throughout Year 9, French, Mathematics and History/Geography exams, validation of an A2 level in English (as part of the European references for foreign languages), and the Internet and Computer Studies brevet exam.
