LCS Takes Home the Gold!
The Lycée Condorcet de Sydney has taken home the gold at the 2023 AEFE Inter-School Asia-Pacific Swimming Championships, finishing on a total of 7089.05 points. Lycée Français René Descartes came second with 2318 points, and Lycée Français de Shanghai came third with 2286 points. This is the first time that the host school has won the CAPN, proving just how difficult it is. It is not, in fact, a question of having the most swimmers, but about all-round performance, and this certainly was an all-round effort by our entire community!
First of all, we would like to thank the CAPN ambassador, Solenne Figuès, as well as the PE teachers, the swimmers, the parents and all the amazing volunteers and time-keepers who all contributed to making the tournament a success. We are also celebrating the fact that NSW Swimming has approved the swim times of the CAPN participants and that this has allowed two LCS swimmers, Roger in Year 9 and Emmeline in Year 6, to qualify for the Australian National Championships taking place next month.
Having said this, the CAPN is about so much more than just sporting achievements. This championship plays an important role in promoting Australian and academic culture and cultural exchanges. The children took part in seminars on stress management, injuries, nutrition and high performance sport, thanks to Solenne Figuès who gave three 1.5 hour talks. Furthermore, the students who timed and officiated at the competitions will receive a diploma from the French Ministry of Education (UNSS) as “young officials” thanks to their training ahead of, and their participation during, the CAPN. Congratulations!
Finally, the students have had the opportunity to make new friends from other schools across the region, and to form incredible bonds with other swimmers in our school. This fantastic experience will remain with them for a long time, and it would not have been possible without the amazing help and support of our entire school community – thank you!

Question: What do you like most about being involved in the CAPN?
Answer: I really enjoyed sharing and interacting with the children from all the French schools. Swimming with them and then doing workshops on swimming and health as I’m a physiotherapist too, and then their energy, I really enjoyed it all.
Question: Why is this type of tournament so important for young swimmers?
Answer: This is a unique experience where they get to meet other swimmers their age from the Asia-Pacific area, spend a week away from their parents where they have to be independent and self-sufficient in a new environment. They are also learning a lot and sharing all their experiences with others throughout the week.
Question: How does this tournament help young athletes prepare for future competitions?
Answer: Swimming is a difficult sport. You have to train a lot, sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, and when you get to live something like this it helps you want to continue, to perform and to surpass yourself! When training becomes difficult, you remember those magical moments during competitions and you find an inexhaustible source of motivation!
